Last Tuesday night, I was watching TV with my wife during prime time. Twice I saw advertisements from HHS urging people to go to www.healthcare.gov to enroll in health insurance for Obamacare.
Unfortunately, I try to stay informed about health insurance. After-all, 90% of my business is health insurance related. Last Tuesday and Wednesday the head of CMS and the head of HHS both testified before a House of Representatives that www.healthcare.gov is not working correctly and the planned fixes will not be completed until late in November.
I saw those advertisements on Tuesday night. Earlier that day, the head of CMS testified to a Senate committee that www.healthcare.gov was still not fixed. On Wednesday, the Secretary of HHS, Kathleen Sebelius, repeated that www.healthcare.gov was still not working correctly, to a Senate hearing.
As an American citizen, it caused me to wonder, “to whom are the people in D.C. lying?” If the website is actually reliable, I wonder why the heads of CMS and HHS are misleading congress. If the website is truly not reliable, why is HHS spending tax money to advertise something that is not working?
Regardless of what you see on TV, avoid the federal website unless you are eligible for federal subsidies for health insurance. Please do not misunderstand me. I am not advising anyone to boycott Obamacare and go without health insurance. What I am saying is that you have a choice of where and when you can get approved health insurance.
If you are ineligible for federal subsidies, buy your Obamacare approved health insurance outside of the federal website. Most insurance companies have websites that actually work.
(For example, if you live in TX, you can use the links to your left to buy approved individual/family health insurance.)
If you will get a subsidy, your only option is to enroll through the federal website, however, only use that site during the first two weeks of December if you do not already have Obamacare approved health insurance.
If you live in a state that will allow you to keep your existing health insurance until it renews in 2014, keep it and wait until March to do your enrollment. By that time, even a website built by the federal government should be functioning properly and a recent rule change from HHS, on October 28, grants an automatic exemption to Americans, from the Obamacare penalty, provided they buy approved health insurance from the federal website during the National Open Enrollment.
